What causes flooding in Portland homes
Pacific Northwest atmospheric-river storm events overwhelming gutters and roof drainage, sump pump failure during heavy rain, basement or crawlspace flooding in low-lying areas near the Willamette, and storm-driven window or foundation water intrusion are the common causes.
What to do in the first hour
Stay out of flood water if it’s more than ankle-deep or near electrical sources. Shut off electricity to the affected area from a dry, safe location if possible. Don’t wade through unknown-depth water. Call a professional immediately, and photograph visible damage from a safe vantage point for insurance.
DIY feasibility — be honest
Flood water covering more than a small area, or water of unknown or contaminated origin — storm runoff, sewer-adjacent backup, groundwater — is not a DIY job. It typically falls into Category 2 or 3, meaning standard household cleaning products and box fans won’t safely or effectively resolve it.
Why DIY is dangerous specifically for flood water
Storm and groundwater flooding often carries bacteria, chemicals, and debris picked up from the ground and street runoff — a different exposure risk than a clean burst pipe.
Our flood cleanup process
Rapid assessment, safety shutoff verification, extraction, decontamination for contaminated water categories, structural drying and dehumidification, moisture monitoring, and documentation for insurance.
Insurance claim assistance
Flood-related coverage is often more complex than a simple pipe burst — some flood causes require separate flood insurance, others are covered under a standard homeowners policy depending on the source. We document thoroughly to support whichever claim applies. We don’t provide legal or insurance advice; confirm coverage specifics with your carrier.
